It all started one brisk clear morning 2 days after Thanksgiving. I was hunting a small swamp on private land and I was sitting on a tripod stool behind a fallen oak that overlooks the swamp. It was 0730 hours with a slight breeze from the northeast with the temp hovering around 30 degrees. All of a sudden I saw a sapling waving back and forth about 30 yards straight out in front of me, then I saw a shiny pair of antlers and they were walking towards me.
Things could not have been better the wind was in my face and the buck was coming straight at me.
He stopped behind a tree which was only 10 yards away and by watching him I knew which way he was going to turn so I slowly got ready and rested my 12 gauge pump on the tree I was hiding behind. The buck turned and took 2 steps offering me a broadside shot at 10 yards. I calmly put the cross hairs behind the shoulder and squeezed the trigger and watched as he jumped and turned to run toward the same direction he came from.
It only took a few seconds and I heard him crash. I replayed everything in my head as I was getting my gear together and after a couple of minutes I got up and started tracking, the buck went only 40 yards before expiring.
After 16 years of shooting does and button bucks I was now looking at my first actual pair of antlers, a beautiful 4 point buck. I was so excited that I could not wait to tell everyone but thinking back at it now while I am typing this it is not the antlers I was excited about but the
adrenalin that I felt.
Whitetail hunting is such a passion of mine that I firmly believe and also tell everyone that just being in the woods and seeing the deer is worth it and if I fill a tag than I just consider that a bonus.
